various artists:Simla Beat (Germany/Ten Little Indians/199?)
Reissue of 2 ultra-rare compillations of garage bands from India released originally by an Indian tobacco company in conjunction with Grammophone Records of India. No sitars or ragas to be heard here; the sounds are straight Western-style garage and psychedelia. Fuzz guitars and go-go organs abound. Originals are of "count the number of known copies on one hand and have 3 fingers left over" rarity.
This very limited 2 record-set was the first release on the highly acclaimed Little Indians label (later to become Shadoks), known for the high production quality of its releases. This was a numbered edition of 450 copies in a beautiful and massively thick gatefold cover.. The copy offered here is number 162.
I've never seen an original copy of either volume, so I don't know how much of the packaging is based on the originals. I presume the highly decorative and psychedelic outer cover is a newer design. The notes on the inside of the gatefold are stated to be the original liner notes. The labels look like reproductions of the original labels (see scan of one).
The cover and both records are all Mint minus. However, the label on Side One is slightly torn (visible in scan below).
