Description
This auction is one of a kind on eBay, and there will never be another one like it. Please read carefully, as these items are only two of a kind. What I mean by this is simple: The 13 canvases that create Where Purgatory Ends have only been printed in two copies. One belongs to the curator of the greatest music festival out there, Tilburg’s Roadburn Festival (Holland). The second one exists in New York City and is now going on sale for reasons that will be explained below.
UP FOR AUCTION:
- Where Purgatory Ends original set of 13 textile canvases. 13 Different designs. Size: 35inch x 50 inch. The exhibition (this set in particular) was presented in Alba Iulia and Bucharest (Romania), Helsinki (Finland) and New York City (US). Never to be produced again. There is only one more set of these canvases in the world, which was printed exclusively for the Roadburn Festival exhibition in 2012, where they remain in the organizer’s possession.
- 5 sets of postcards with the entire exhibition printed on high quality glossy paper. Size: 8,5inch x 9,5 inch. Last remaining copies. They were available for sale only at the New York City event
- 3 sets of posters with the 6 designs chosen to be printed in this format. Size: 11 inch x 17 inch. Last remaining copies. These posters were only available for sale at the New York City event.
- 3 sealed CDs with the soundtrack of the concept. As far as I know, the artist still has some copies for sale.
DESCRIPTION:
1: Who is Costin Chioreanu?
Costin Chioreanu is a Romanian born visual artist who is today very active in the heavy metal world, and is considered, rightfully, one of the most talented designers. He has worked so far with an incredibly vast array of bands, to name a few: At The Gates, Mayhem, Darkthrone, Opeth, Tribulation, Triptykon, Napalm Death, Candlemass, Ulver, Sigh, Spiritual Beggars, Leprous, Aura Noir, Arch Enemy, Ulver, Grave, Destroyer666, Deicide, My Dying Bride, Grave, The Devil’s Blood, Solefald, Arcturus, Twilight Of The Gods, Primordial, Hecate Enthroned, Summoning, Hexvessel, Vader, Vulture Industries, Virus, Hexvessel, The Konsortium, Arktau Eos, Dark Buddha Rising and many, many others including festivals or promoters all across the world. He is currently the official artist behind Holland’s Roadburn Festival, widely regarded as one of the most unique musical events on the planet.

2: What is Where Purgatory Ends?
It's hard to describe as it was a very complex endeavor, but it's a very special exhibition, that features its own soundtrack recorded by the artist himself in collaboration with other musicians, including Ruke Eriksen (Aura Noir, ex Mayhem, ex Ava Inferi, etc).
This fantastic event debuted on August 19th in the wonderful medieval fortress of Alba Iulia as an integral part of Dark Bombastic Evening Festival III, and it left the crowd awestruck. It traveled to Bucharest, Helsinki, New York City and Tilburg. The Roadburn exhibition was the end of this adventure.
The gallery itself is made of thirteen large images printed on black canvas, all representing various important moments in the young Artist’s career. Some of these beautiful works are dreams waiting to materialize while others are pure, idealized utopias. However most are just memories that just really needed to be set free.
At the core of the exhibition lies The Seeker - a personal visualization of the Soul’s asexuality, a half-male half-female entity, sentient energy questing for self-discovery through universes and life cycles. Where Purgatory Ends is a unique experience.
Aside from the visual feast, a communion took place where the guest was invited to eat cookies in the shape of birds – a common theme in all of the works presented. The viewer was then united with the world portrayed on the walls and their own body. In New York City, we made these cookies at a Romanian bakery and served complementary Romanian wine to the guests.
Third and last, to accompany the artwork and align the senses, a soundtrack filed the space. The music, written and recorded by Costin himself and Rune Eriksen (of the mighty Aura Noir, Ava Inferi, ex-Mayhem) together with Andrei Ionut (bass) and Tudor Diaconescu – violin. The soundtrack is 22 minutes long and is a dark avant-garde synthesis of diverse genres including Dark Ambient, Doom Metal and Black Metal.
Regarding WPE soundtrack, Rune Eriksen says:
“When I learned that Costin was planning a virtual exhibition, and were busy at work in composing soundtrack to the great arts he is known for, I immediately offered my assistance to help finalize the songs. Working and thinking ’outside the box’ has always intrigued me, so I was more than happy to collaborate on this instrumental adventure. The sonic journeys that Costin managed to convey is truly of a unique and inspiring character, so I am happy I could partake and add a bit of my crookedness to it also. A trip beyond and below!”
Regarding WPE concept, Costin Chioreanu says:
“I have never reached the stars, nor did I ever exit the earth’s atmosphere. I have never been to the depths of the earth to see that it’s made of dirt or reigned by another world, I have never been thousands of meters deep to see if I can breathe, letting water invade my lungs. Almost everything I know, I have been told. Certainties, be they growing or not, are close to me, the one living under the cover of flesh and bone, the nameless, shape or serial number. I see all life as a tiny part of a long journey. This journey has nothing to do with form or state of matter, not even the borders that must be crossed, don’t know if this is the way things are since nobody around me can confirm my theories or dismiss them. All I know is that this thought makes me what I am, and everyone around me is passionate, openly or not, about what is beyond death or before life. Some have found the answers easier, I chose to look for them further.
Where purgatory ends” is an ironical title since I have no idea how the end of the road looks like or if the road ever really ends. It is with this thought that I hope the people that come see my works or listen to my music will appreciate this artistic happening as a celebration of our journey in and towards becoming.”
The New York City/US premiere of the exhibition took place at Saint Vitus Bar in Brooklyn on November 3rd 2011,and was followed by a few select artist performances that featured Mick Barr(Krallice, Ocrilim, etc), Kevin Hufnagel(Gorguts, Dysrhythmia, etc), Daniel Menche and Musk Ox from Canada who performed its first NYC gig. It was a really good time spent amongst friends.
The cherry on top of the cake was that on the same day, Heavy Metal God Tony Iommi of Black Sabbath also launched his biography book at Saint Vitus. No words can describe how awesome was to meet him, and have this great exhibition in the background. A few photos can be seen among the presented set.
3: Why is this on sale?
I am the organizer of the event and a very close friend with the artist. First and foremost, the artist was asked if he was ok with this sale, and he was all for it, then and now, given the reasons behind it. There are a few. The practical one is obvious: the canvases are too big (35inch x 50 inch) to be in a small apartment, they deserve a bigger home where they can be admired. It seems unjust that they lie rolled in tubes, hidden in a closet.
I am also embarking on new ventures that require funding. Promoting shows and flying artists from Europe is no joke when you want to do something exclusive. Big risks and investments come in play.
The ultimate goal will actually benefit the artist in the end. It is our plan to do a special event sometime next year where Costin Chioreanu will be invited in New York City again, this time to present a brand new exhibition of a larger scale, in a much more interesting environment. It will be something unique. No plans can be revealed at the moment, but rest assured, the money will go back where it needs to.
Hope that answers all the questions. If there are more, feel free to Email me directly.
I offer and expect seriousness in this matter, as with all my auctions.
Needless to say, I hate to see these canvases go, but I truly believe they deserve a new home where they can stay on walls and not hidden in the dark.
Shipping will be $25 within US and $60 worlwide, registered. Everything included in this auction will be sent in a very safely manner, and the canvases will be shipped in the custom made tubes the artist brought them in.
ATTENTION: BECAUSE THE AUCTION IS LISTED UNDER "LPs" section, eBay does not allow me to charge more than $4. SHIPPING WILL BE AS STATED ABOVE.
ATTACHED, You will find photos of the exhibition from the various places around the world where it was presented. The order is: Alba Iulia, Helsinki, New York City. These canvases traveled a lot!
Again, any questions you may have, please write first! Any interested parties can receive via Email a set of over 50 photos that include all the canvases, posters and postcards, as well as many images from all the exhibitions where this beautiful experience was presented. Those who were lucky to be there know how special it was.
Please check these links before making up your mind. Needless to say, more than a collector’s item. Two of a kind in this world.
Takk!
