RARE SURF HOLY GRAIL 45 -SURFARIS - WIPE OUT -DFS no # DFS-11/12 OriginaL- MEGA RARE This is the Holy Grail of all Surf 45's. Wipe - Out plays with little background crackling. Surfer Joe plays with some crackling. Visible scraps and scratches. Has little effect on playability. Not original sleeve. Notes from websites:
This is the famous label with extra verses of Surfer Joe, the original A side issue. I read somewhere there were 2000 copies made of this single. The Legendary Auctions web site has details of a copy of this record that sold in 2002 for $3181.00.
Instrumental surf music is a uniquely American sound of the 1960's. developed, adopted and popularized by the culture of the sport, surf music attempted to convey the feeling and rhythms of surfing through music. This music was first a regional phenomenon, and was most popular on the west coast of Southern California. One group to emerge to superstar status was the Surfaris from Glendora, CA. The Surfaris achieved international stardom as writers, recording artists and performers of the hit song, "Wipe Out." During the recording session in late 1962, it was suggested that a gimmick sound representing a "wipe out" off a surfboard be utilized. The final result was the sound of cracking boards and that crazy laugh for the introduction. The song was written quickly on the spot, because a B-side was needed for "Surfer Joe." "Wipe Out" was written and recorded in a single night at Pal Studios in Cucamonga, California. A couple hundred records were pressed on the independent DFS label, and most of those were sold for a $1 at local high schools in the area. It wasn't long however, before the infectious rhythm of "Wipe Out" was making waves. Eventually the group and their famous song, were signed to Dot Records, and "Wipe Out" became a million selling hit!
