Description
This lot contains seven 10-inch 78 RPM records by Erskine Hawkins and his Orchestra, all in the jazz genre. Although my item title says there are "six" records in the lot, there are in fact seven, but I thought I'd play it safe because one of them is a duplicate, as is explained below.
The eight Bluebird sides are all considered "hot" enough for inclusion in Brian Rust's iconic "Hot Jazz Discography", which places their recording dates between 1938 and 1941. And, to be fair, I think the Victor sides are omitted only because they were recorded after Brian Rust's cut-off date of 1942.
All seven are shown in the first picture, then individually or in pairs, both sides, in the following order. All are instrumental except as noted beside the individual titles below.
Pictures # 2 and 3:
Two copies of RCA Victor # 20-2284 - "Tippin' in?" and "I've Got a Right to Cry" (vocal by Laura Washington).
Pictures # 4 and 5:
Victor # 20-1639 - "Remember" (vocal by Asa A. Harris) and "Tippin' In" (again).
Pictures # 6 and 7:
Bluebird # B-10854 - "Five o'Clock Whistle" and "Sweet Georgia Brown" (featuring Paul Bascomb on tenor sax).
Bluebird # B-11372 - "I'm in a Low Down Groove" (vocal by Jimmy Mitchelle) and "Uncle Bud."
Pictures # 8 and 9:
Bluebird # B-11192 - "Who's Beatin' My Time with You?" (vocal by Ida James) and "Blackout."
Bluebird # B-10029 - "Easy Rider (I Wonder Where My Easy Rider's Gone)" and "A Study in Blue."
They visually range in condition from about VG+ down to about VG, all still nice and shiny, but with varying amounts of surface wear and dull spots. The best looking one is Bluebird # B-10854. I played them all on my Audio-Technica turntable, and there were no skips or repeats, and mostly only typical light levels of background noise, but some scattered clicks and pops and ticking. Because of variations in tracking ability, filtering technology and needle weights, I can offer no guarantees as to how well they will play on your equipment.
