The Smiths - How Soon Is Now/Oscillate Wildly

Rough Trade RT 176 (UK 'mispressed' 7" test pressing)

#7 on the Record Collector Smiths Top 100

Up for sale here is one of the rarest Smiths records of all time, the 7" test pressing of How Soon Is Now? First, the back story: How Soon Is Now? was originally released as an extra track on the 12" of William It Was Really Nothing at the end of 1984. However, demand for the song became so huge - featuring highly in John Peel's Festive 50 - that a number of European countries decided to release it as an A-side (please see my lilac-sleeved copy also up for sale). Eventually, in early 1985, Rough Trade in the UK bowed to the inevitable and made plans to release it as an A-side in the UK as well. However, initially, the plan was to use the instrumental Oscillate Wildly as the 7" b-side, and the test pressings were pressed with this song in place; then the plan was changed to use Well I Wonder as the b-side instead. Instead of manufacturing new test pressings, the Smiths' then manager Scott Piering simply wrote the word 'Faulty' on the b-side label to dissuade radio stations from playing it (there's nothing actually wrong with the pressing, it just plays the standard version of Oscillate). There were very few of these pressed, let alone survived, especially in this condition; all of the text on both labels was hand-written by Scott Piering. Obviously, this is a mega-rare item placed well within the Top 10 of the Smiths Top 100, which I've started at a low price with no reserve - so, serious bidders only, please. Feel free to ask any further questions - and happy bidding!
