Piano and Conductor It will not be hard for listeners to fall in love with “The Spice of Life - VARIETY” because it has been made with loving care as well as talents. It has a full golden quality — musically, vocally and in the purpose for which it was created — to lend a hand to the most, helpless of all humans-children. This is no haphazardly assembled-] or-fund-raising pur- poses album of numbers already perennial favorites and somewhat uneasy on the ears for over-exposure. The album has been created by artists in their professions — singers, musicians, composers, lyricists and sound men of top-rank,new from the ground up to fit the theme of "The Spice of Life — VARIETY:' Every one of its numbers is a first-time-on-vinyl. Fully five of the numbers ("Puppets’ Lament” and “Dinosaur Walk”, instrumental novelty tunes, and “Notte D’Amor”, “Cradle Song of Hope” and “How Many Roads”) have that sweet smell of both commercial and artistic success. Their maiden etching here on one album is likely to make it a potential collector's item. The album's creators — their credits are elsewhere on this cover (sleeve) — have achieved instrumental and sound effects that will have their colleagues wondering over the method of their achievement. And yet there is nothing gimmicky or discordant in its arrangements. From Marie Lawler Balaban's Side One opening with the delicately torchy loveliness of “Too Late” to the fade-out on Side Two of her singing colleague, John McCormick, handling two voice parts as well as doing solo guitar accompaniment to his own composition, “I Will Follow You”, there is a fluid, pleasingly provocative change of pace and mood. Ballad, waltz, Latin style; bossa nova, rock and roll (well rounded and disciplined), pure romantic ballad, some of it bi-lingual, modern lullaby — all are represented. And it is not strange — since the Heart is the symbol of Variety — each number, even the novelties, have an abun- dance of h-e-a-r-t. This writer heard the album numbers off the master tape... in an interview room at the Miami Herald — not ten feet from the desk once occupied by Variety's Jack Bell, the Town Crier. We introduce to you the John McCormick of this generation. John is 23 years i old and gifted with a fine voice of unusual quality and range. The three numbers he sings in this introductory album will bear out our contention . . . John McCormick will make his mark in the music world of today. John was formally with the New Christie Minstrels and recently concluded a ten week engagement at the Deauville Hotel appearing as Conrad in “Bye Bye Birdie". MARIE BALABAN Marie Balaban, known professionally as Marie Lawler, has sung in top theatres, clubs, radio and TV shows. Upon making Miami her home, Marie Balaban has devoted her vocal talents entirely to charitable endeavors, including Variety ; Children’s Hospital Women’s Committee, of which she is an ; Honorary Life Member. When asked to record for this album, she accepted enthusiastically. We feel fortunate indeed to have her interpretation and delicate treatment of our songs. MIKE AND KARI BRANDT Mike is a music major at the University of Miami, Kari majored in Drama at the San Jose University, San Jose, California. When asked to stand in for Itzie and Bitzie, they thought it would be a real fun thing. It was . . . and Itzie and Bitzie are happy too! TO JACK BELL This album will give all of us in Variety Club Tent 33 and the Staff of Variety Children’s Hospital a means of helping our children’s hospital and also the privilege to pay tribute and dedicate this album to the late and beloved Jack Bell affectionately known as “The Town Crier”, a columnist for the Miami Herald. Jack Bell was the man who promoted the idea of this hospital being sponsored by a Variety Club and because of his love and belief in the generous hearts of show people and those in the allied fields of the entertainment industry, helped form the Variety Club in Miami, Florida. Jack Bell was the toughest newspaperman in Miami and had the softest heart in the world — the man who was the Miami Herald’s link with the people who needed help the most and who could always be counted on to lend a hand when it was needed most. The children who are being cared for today at Variety Children’s Hospital may never have heard of Jack Bell, but he was the man who built that hospital and the man who nourished it with love and found the money when the cash drawer was running low. His friends in the newspaper business could not outnumber his friends in the conununity, but all had a common bond. They loved the man who loved people. Miami will miss the man who was Jack Bell.
