Scarce 1985 issue of a 1958 live recording from the early postwar european avant garde, documenting a concert of Boulez' Domaine Musical society at a time when these young composers were exploding the ideas of serialism and atonality into a newer and more radically experimental music. This album contains one of David Tudor's earliest recordings, performing the Boulez piece alongside flutist Severino Gazzelloni. Stockhausen's Zeitmasze is based on his concept of "relative rhythm" (that is, tempo relative to the lung capacity and playing ability of each musician). Boulez conducts the Berio and Stockhausen works. Gazzelloni is also the main soloist in the Berio work. The Messiaen piece is played by Yvonne Loriod. This recording was originally issued in Vega's Presence de la musique contemporaine series.

Berio was a collaborator with Italo Calvino, an associate of Karlheinz Stockhausen, a pupil of Luigi Dallapiccola and Olivier Messiaen, teacher of Steve Reich, and director of the electro-acoustic department of ICRAM in Paris where he worked with Pierre Boulez. Boulez is an influential French postwar composer, conductor, writer, and lecturer who worked with Karlheinz Stockhausen, Luciano Berio, Pierre Schaeffer, Iannis Xenakis, and Gyorgi Ligeti, and was a student of Arnold Schoenberg and Olivier Messiaen. Stockhausen was a German experimental composer who was a student of Olivier Messiaen and a contemporary of John Cage and Iannis Xenakis; he pioneered musique concrete at the INA-GRM, WDR Koln, and NHK Tokyo early electronic music studios, explored improvisation and live electronics with David Tudor, Vinko Globokar, and Michel Portal, and has worked with Pierre Schaeffer, Herbert Eimert, Gottfried Michael Koenig, Pierre Boulez, Luciano Berio, Karel Goeyvaerts, Mauricio Kagel, Franco Evangelisti, Bruno Maderna, and Henri Pousseur. Known as the father of the French avant garde, Messiaen worked with Pierre Schaeffer and Pierre Henry, and was an essential teacher of Pierre Boulez, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Luciano Berio, Francois Bayle, and Francois Bernard Mache (among many other 20th century luminaries); he was influenced by Claude Debussy, Igor Stravinsky, Hindu music, Gamelan, and nature (birdsong), and his composing style was driven in part by his synesthesia (a brain condition that caused him to visually perceive sounds). Tudor studied under Stefan Wolpe, Irma Wolpe, and William Hawke and worked with John Cage, Earle Brown, Morton Feldman, Christian Wolff, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Mauricio Kagel, and Pierre Boulez.
