The record we are offering here is an original Beatles Butcher Cover album. This is what is known as the “third state” pressing, with the original “butcher block” cover art showing after the replacement art cover was peeled off. The record itself is an original Mono release.
COVER: Overall, whoever did the peeling of the front cover did a pretty decent job, especially when compared to many of the other third state covers we have seen throughout the years! The spine, top and bottom seams have some wear but are completely intact except for a thin 1/4 inch bottom right corner seam split.
On the front, the biggest surface tear areas are near the top center and a much smaller area along the far left edge towards the bottom half. There are a few other areas on the front with small tears and peeling imperfections, and also some places where a thin red marker was used to highlight areas along three of the Beatles’ white jackets.
The back of the jacket has surface tearing near the outer perimeter, where it appears the cover was attached to something at one time. There is also a spot near the center of the back cover with a light circular surface tear, about the size of a quarter. Two areas with writing appear on the back cover, one reading “The would-be front cover of this record was peeled off. This is what was underneath”, and the other showing the name “Bill Nelson” near the left edge.
VINYL: This record was carefully cleaned on a VPI machine and has a good glossy luster. The vinyl does show areas that look like they had some heat exposure and there is some moderate warping, but not major. There is light to medium depth scratching but only a few of them can actually be felt on the grooves. We listened to the entire LP and it played through for us fine. The sound was enjoyable although the needle swayed slightly to the left and right as the record was spinning, especially on the first couple of songs on each side. The record labels are clean and in nice shape.
