The Who : Quadrophenia A1/B2/A1/B2 Very Early Press Variation 1973 (Track Record)

This very early pressing on the Track Record label just could not play with any greater precision.  I have play tested the album in full and there is nothing that detracts from the unbelievable sonic quality on offer here.  There is NO interference - no ticks, no clicks, no pops and no static.  The clarity, depth and power of the audio is outstanding and this is a FINAL UPGRADE classic without a shadow of a doubt.  This is easily the finest example I have ever listened to and the audio can correctly be described 'as new' and there is no inner groove distortion either at the end of each side.  The vinyls are visually stunning with no marks or scratches and they have clearly only been lightly played based on the audio and the minimal spindle wear.  Absolutely STUNNING audio across all four sides!

The gatefold cover is in excellent shape with only minimal wear and the 44 page inside booklet is still attached but as described below is a little loose around the staples area.  The original inner sleeves are also in excellent condition.

This cannot really be called a first pressing although I am sure many would!  A genuine first press has a 'delta' (▽) in each runout matrix and this one has three.  This one has two forward slashes (//) on the S2 matrix.  Nonetheless it is still a very early pressing and on Discogs it says it is a 6th variation of the original first press.  Regardless of that you will not find one playing with better audio!

'I Am The Sea' plays with wonderful clarity throughout with no intrusion and provides a Mint start to this classic album.

The segue into 'The Real Me' is perfect and from then on plays with superb audio.  As this is such a clean vinyl Entwistle's bass is so deep and strong here and the clarity of sound is faultless.  Mint

The title track 'Quadrophenia' plays with stunning quality and again there is no sign of any interference.  No skipping here I played the track in its entirety (as I always do) and I cannot praise it highly enough.  Even the quieter sections play without one single dust tick and the power and depth throughout is just incredible.  Another Mint track.

'Cut My Hair' keeps up the standard and plays with no background whatsoever.  No ticks, clicks, pops or static just pure Mint audio including the 'newsreader' end section.

'The Punk And The Godfather' ends the side with audio as close to perfect as could be.  There is no actual interference and only the bare minimum of inner groove distortion - certainly no more than what you would expect or hope for.  Mint- is a fair assessment of the audio here.

The acoustic intro on 'I'm One' plays beautifully and Townshend's opening vocal is equally as good.  As the tempo increases this standard is kept up and the clarity, depth and power of the audio is comparable to an unplayed record.  Mint

'The Dirty Jobs' is of the same high end standard with literally no intrusion on the audio.  Mint

'Helpless Dancer' also plays with STUNNING clarity throughout with not one iota of interference.  Another Mint track.

I guess there's only so many ways in which to describe perfect audio and needless to say 'Is It In My Head?' and 'I've Had Enough' both play with incredible power and depth and...no ticks, clicks etc.  I cannot emphasise enough just how strong the playback is and there is no inner groove distortion.  So far this double album is playing rather well!  Both grade as Mint

The quiet 'spoken' / piano intro on '5:15' plays so well with only a couple of mega light ticks and as the volume ramps up the playback is superb.  From then on it plays with tremendous power and there is just no interference.  There is so much going on musically with this track and yet the sonic quality has not suffered in any way.  Basically plays like it has never been played before!  The vocals are faultless and as for the instrumental sections - wow!  A Mint start to S3.

The intro on 'Sea And Sand' plays perfectly as does the remainder!  Again each note so clean and precise and Townshend's end guitar section is 'as new' without a doubt...like the entire track!  Mint

'Drowned' maintains this high end standard with impeccable quality from start to finish with no intrusion.  Another faultless Mint version.

'Bell Boy' ends the side in sublime style with no ticks, clicks, pops or static.  No distortion either.  Mint

The intro on 'Doctor Jimmy' has no background and as this classic kicks into gear the playback is so strong and clear.  Every section plays with phenomenal quality and even the quieter Is it me? vocal sections play with unbelievable clarity without any background.  Mint from the first note to the last.  Not bad for a track running at nearly 9 minutes!

'The Rock' keeps up the good work and is 'as new' with no intrusion.  Mint

The intro on 'Love, Reign O'er Me' has to be heard to be believed!  It sums up the entire album really.  There is not even a dust tick and the clarity is sensational.  Understated and powerful in equal measure this final track plays with exceptional quality with no interference (of course) and with a strength and definition that is just STUNNING.  Moon's end sequence just could not play any better.  This is a definitive Mint version.

In summary this early variation on the first pressing plays to the highest standard possible with NO interference and when you consider there are four sides here that is very impressive to say the least.  The clarity, depth and power of the audio is 'as new' and that is no exaggeration.  I do not 'over-grade' my records and as I listen to every track in full I am in a good position to grade accurately and with honesty.  This album has not been played very much and it is clearly the finest example I have ever encountered in all my years of selling.  A FINAL UPGRADE time-warp classic in every way.  Wow!

The Gatefold, Booklet & Inner Sleeves

The cover is in excellent condition with only a little shelf wear and there is nothing that stands out.  The edges have only minimal rubbing and the wide spine remains 100% legible with only a small number of minor 'rubs'.  The corners have some wear but not an excessive amount and the opening edges have only light handling wear.  The front cover is very clean with just one crease line near the right edge and minimal ringwear and the back cover is near perfect with just one very small corner crease bottom left.  The inside of the gatefold is unmarked and for once the 44 page booklet is still attached to the cover.  However, it would take much to separate it because the paper has pulled around the two staples so there is a small tear around each of them.  Aside from that it is in lovely condition with no marking or writing on it.  A fine example overall.

The two original 'Plastic Bags...' poly-lined inners are in excellent condition with no side splits and just one has a small tear on the top edge.  They are very clean with only light creasing and very minimal marking.

The records have been cleaned on a Pro-Ject VC-S machine
