Label/Format: Track – original flat matt, intense black finished format with silver text. Ridged ring nearer the hole and a fine rim bevel.

Label Conditions: Two very fine examples: clean and attractive with only light to near light+ spindle marks that are mainly fine and only really show under angled light. A classic album, the early copies often played into submission on less than subtle record players. Slight flash residue remains on the hole rim, possibly a larger piece chipped off with application on the turntable in the past. Important Note: later copies had much paler labels that appear more a deep grey rather than intense black, these often have a semi-gloss sheen, these are NOT originals. (Please see label scan for all information needed).

Weight of this Record: 143 grams. A very good weight for this record (Later copies were 20 to 30 grams lighter than this and were very thin and floppy).

Rarity: Taken purely on the title, this is not a rare album as such. But clean, lightly played early pressed copies are a different matter. Also this copy includes the hugely collectable and scarcer ‘HEAD HUNTERS’ ‘Get a Head’ inner. This is one of the most sort after inners and early copies of this album with this famous insert are most prized and this inner is in super condition. This beautiful vintage collage insert includes pictures of bands and artists that recorded on Polydor, Track, Atlantic, MGM, Verve, Karma Sutra, DG and Buddah Records – sounds a lot of labels, but try finding this inner easily. Please check out the pictures of this beautiful item, they will rarely, if ever be found better.

Brief Artist & Album Info: I am sometimes asked by friends, fellow sellers, my advert readers and customers: ‘What is your favourite rock album’? – well it’s an almost impossible question to answer, but ‘Who’s Next’ always has to be considered as one of the very best. This amazing album has it all: stunning vocals, incredible musicianship and songs played to virtuoso standards. Just listen to rock’s greatest ever drummer (well he gets my vote anyway), Keith Moon’s power-house percussion is top of the premier league and sets standards few others even got close too. This is a master-class of quality, it simply shows up modern music for what it really is – very mediocre at best – this is one of the most exciting records ever issued. Most-all collectors will already know and probably already own this masterpiece but this lovely copy with the rarer inner makes this extra special – check out those early matrixes and stampers seen further up. Every song, is a classic, faultless and flawless, this is Daltrey, Moon, Entwistle and Townshend at the peak of their powers – timeless brilliance and no collection could or should ever be without of a copy of this album. It’s always a pleasure to offer a strong copy of this album, the record plays with little unwanted with all the dynamic fidelity only the early-pressed records really offer. The wear-prone cover is in fine condition and that elusive ‘Head Hunters’ inner puts the icing on the cake.

This Cover’s Potential for Wear: High: seldom seen devoid of ringwear and rubbing.

Cover Grade and Format: NEAR EXCELLENT: a single unlaminated format, matt finished. Printed and made in England by MacNeill.

Cover Front: A very fine front for one of rock’s most famous covers. A fine press mark near the centre has low visibility, seen more under light with a few light creases but little rubbing and few marks overall. A little corner rubbing just encroaches into view. Never an easy one, but looking highly respectable on this example.

Cover Back: The back is very revealing and seldom seen even decent, especially with an original record inside. This one bucks-the-trend somewhat and looks quite impressive. The lack of penetrating ringwear and rubbing is always a bonus and with just a few very fine and faint surface hairline creases, this has little else to fault.

Top Edge: Small rubs near the corners and centre, little else.

Bottom Edge: Light to light+ patchy rubbing.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, sharp with hardly any wear and guaranteed untrimmed. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: Solid and quite straight but a little compression in a couple of places. The ends are gently tapered in manufacture and these also remain reasonably neat. Very importantly, ALL text is totally unworn.

Corners: All corners have rubbed with around moderate wear but do retain fine shape.

Cover Summary: A very fine looker – the lack of ringwear, main face rubbing and grubbiness makes for an almost exceptional example, so often seen with sticker tears and other damage, this a highly respectable example and it should please many collectors, but not the perfectionists.

The ‘Head Hunters’ – Get a Head Inner: MINT(-): and very arguably, undergraded at even that. Only a select few examples of this famous title included this inner – I am always trying to find them. Fully lined and with robust flipback construction (all super neat, almost as new), unsplit or torn and no noteworthy creasing. With a rich dark, matt finish, this can fade and age badly too, yes it can even suffer ringwear and often does – just a merest fine hint on the text side (but look hard). Slight gum edge browning on the inside, but unseen from the outside – the side that counts of course. A classic rare inner with all the artists you would imagine included in the collage from the aforementioned labels. A select few are: Led Zeppelin; Frank Zappa and The Mothers of Invention; Rory Gallagher; CSN; Ritchie Havens; The Who, Melanie et al. A class item, flipback folded, getting rare initself and highly prized and sort-after, especially so in such incredibly fine condition.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++) / EXCELLENT: with just a mild pressing mark on side two that has NO sound whatsoever. Totally superficial surface trace blemishes that few records ever escape as a bare minimum. Very clean, shiny, intense black and quite heavily pressed. With so many examples played into oblivion, this early copy looks very lightly used and a lovely record that should please many, if not most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This sublime album plays even above it’s high visual grading with practically nothing to fault. Strong, totally distortion-free sound (never take this for granted on a complex recording like this), all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound – an album to play loud, the power of this record still astonishes even today and I never tire of hearing a worthy copy. Practically devoid of surface sounds and no pops or clicks were note and few copies will play much better than this. Both channels are clean and sharp, I feel very sure this record has been played very lightly and has been carefully handled and stored within a in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this massively important and truly great record. This copy will prove quite difficult to find significantly better and is strongly recommended. Yes this really could be the greatest rock album ever made, I call it a Bargain – the best you ever had – I feel another play coming on.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. All records are posted in professional boxes (NOT Mailers, these do not offer any real protection). The record(s) are REMOVED from their main cover to avoid edge splits and placed within a brand new polylined inner. The record’s original inner will be included if available. The boxes are then reinforced with at least TWO, ULTRA THICK stiffeners for maximum extra protection – these are FOUR TIMES thicker than commercial stiffeners and are custom-made for oneadayrecords. Really rare and expensive albums will even be Double Boxed if deemed necessary and possible. When larger boxes are used, the thick record and stiffener ‘sandwich’ is then thickly embedded into bubble-wrap to bulk out the record inside the box to centre the item inside to reduce the risk of damage still further. Printed address labels are used for clarity as well as a sender label. Customers requests or special needs for P&P will be respected if at all possible but ‘Signed-For’ posting is NOT an option anymore. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
