RARE FOLKWAYS LP box set WITH booklet
Folkways FP 62
Issued in 1955
Great and rare Folkways box with EXCELLENT condition, original booklet, see photos in our embedded picasaweb gallery below.
From a web review of this project:
"Tony Schwartz, the father of the mix-tape! Tony was homebound but traveled the world through the audio recordings he traded for with friends around the globe. Long before the web brought people together with instantaneous communication and digital recordings and downloadable files, Tony built a network of like-minded anthropologists, sociologists and collectors."
THIS is the original and mega-rare configuration, with a different track listing and title.
The revised version was retitled "The World in My Mail Box", with the same catalog number, and then that number was changed again to FD 5562
Here are the official notes for the revised edition, directly from the Smithsonian Institute / Folkways web-page:
"Sound archivist Tony Schwartz spent much of his life documenting the sounds of his New York City neighborhood, largely because his agoraphobia prevented him from traveling far from home. Schwartz nonetheless amassed a large collection of recordings from international musicians through audio exchanges via the mail. The World in My Mail Box features music from this exchange. The collection spans a number of continents and ranges from intimate solo vocal performances ("Norwegian student sings") to live club performances ("Song from African nightspot"). The liner notes include some of Schwartz’s correspondence with the performers on the album."
