A very nice copy of this rare and highly sought after 1960 UK very first pressing jazz classic, on the coveted TEMPO label, TAP 29

The dead wax matrix numbers are :

Side 1  VMGT-1636-1B with stampers "1" and "U" at 8.30 o'clock and 2.30 o'clock respectively

Side 2   VMGT-1637-1B with stampers "1" and "C" at 9 o'clock and 3.30 o'clock respectively

The appearance and overall condition of the heavy, flat vinyl is excellent (EX). Gleaming vinyl with a jet black sheen giving a beautiful appearance in normal daylight. It is only with close inspection and under a bright light that some wispy hairlines and faint scuffs come into view, all of which are purely superficial and do not impinge upon the wonderful audio quality. On side 2 the wispy hairlines and light scuff marks are slightly more prevalent with a few spanning more than one track (there is one very light mark which spans all three tracks but, again, you need a good light in order to notice it), but all seem to be surface only and I have been unable to feel any of these minor blemishes which, along with the truly excellent sound quality (devoid of any intrusive clicks) confirms that there is nothing beneath the surface. This record has been played sparingly and the condition of the vinyl remains truly impressive, especially considering it's 59 year antiquity. Overall I would grade the condition of the record as being excellent minus (EX-).

The labels are excellent (EX). The matt textured background with all of the black writing and Tempo logo remain completely intact and in truly excellent condition. There are a few light, faint spindle trails adjacent to the centre hole on each label but these do not diminish the excellent condition of the labels themselves.

The condition of the laminated (front and back) outer sleeve is very good (VG). Nicely presentable with the front photo still impressively intact and all writing on the reverse side similarly intact and perfectly legible, but there are blemishes : there is a 3cm scuff in the middle of the top edge, a 1.5cm scuff (which penetrates the cardboard) in the middle of the spine, x3 score marks on the front side (see photo) : one is a 5cm horizontal score towards the top of the front edge, another is a 23cm vertical score, and the other is a 4cm diagonal score to the bottom right corner. There is also a little laminate lifting adjacent to the front opening edge towards the top and on the reverse side there is a 3cm tear emanating from the middle of the opening edge which has been expertly (in my opinion) repaired with sellotape, including a 1cm strip of sellotape which runs neatly along that same entire edge. The top and bottom flip backs on the reverse side are in very good condition with just the odd nick/very light mark, and there is no nasty creasing or laminate lifting. 

Finally, the quality of the audio is excellent...actually, for the most part it is better than excellent - brilliant! Great tone and clarity throughout with no skips, repeats, jumps or nasty clicks. Background crackle/interference is virtually non existent with just the merest hint of some very mild crackle at the very beginning and very end of each side side and at the beginning of track 2, side 1...but it really is negligible and does not impinge upon the oveall truly excellent sound quality. I noticed two very mild clicks towards the beginning of track 2 side 2, and afurtehr mild click towards the end of track 3, side 2 - in each case even close inspection of the vinyl under a bright light could reveal no obvious cause so I have to put these very minor aberrations down to the odd speck of dust in the grooves which I am sure a proper clean would rectify. Each and every track makes for a great listen. Sit back and wallow in the wonderful musicianship of Tubby Hayes on tenor sax at the top of his game, more than ably supported by Terry Shannon (piano), Jeff Clyne (bass), and Phil Seamen (drums). Pure class.

Comes with original poly-lined inner sleeve with "BRITISH AND FOREIGN PATENTS PENDING" and "MADE IN GREAT BRITAIN" text, and with no tears or splits, just some mild creasing at the bottom corners and remaining fully functional. Note that I always post the record in a new plain white inner sleeve in order to protect the original.

In summary a very nice copy of this increasingly rare and sought after 1960 UK 1st pressing jazz classic with the highlight being the impressive condition of the vinyl and wonderful audio quality - a worthy addition to any serious jazz vinyl collection, and only continuing to gain in value

I take great care in separating the record from the outer sleeve in order to help prevent sleeve damage in transit and I always insert the vinyl, outer sleeve and inner into a clear plastic sleeve, thus adding further protection.

Mint

The records itself is in brand new condition with no surface marks or deterioration in sound quality. The cover and any extra items, such as the lyric sheet, booklet or poster are in perfect condition. Records advertised as Sealed or Unplayed should be Mint.

Excellent

The record shows some signs of having been played, but there is very little lessening in sound quality. The cover and packaging might have slight wear and /or creasing.

Very Good

The record has obviously been played many times, but displays no major deterioration in sound quality, despite noticeable surface marks and the occasional light scratch. Normal wear and tear on the cover or extra items, without any major defects, is acceptable.

Good

The record has been played so much that the sound quality has noticeably deteriorated, perhaps with some distortion and mild scratches. The cover and contents suffer from folding, scuffing of edges, spine splits, discolouration, etc.

Fair

The record is still just playable but has not been cared for properly and displays considerable surface noise; it may even jump. The cover and contents are torn, stained and/or defaced

Poor

The record will not play properly due to scratches, bad surface noise, etc. The cover and contents are badly damaged or partly missing.

Bad

The record is unplayable or might even be broken, and is only of use as a collection-filler
