Up for auction are the original 1970 promotional materials of The Beatles “Let It Be” movie produced by United Artists / Apple including a promotional factory sealed copy of the original motion picture soundtrack. Original Apple Records promotional DJ radio station copy of the 13th and last Beatles studio album "Let It Be" whose commercial release occurred on May 18, 1970 in a still factory sealed condition. While Capitol Records was accepting pre-orders for the album, the total of 3.7 million which at the time was the highest for any album in the history of the US recording industry, these promotional copies were shipped to the media and radio stations. Original cardboard gatefold cover with a white "Promotional Copy Not For Sale" round sticker affixed to the upper right-hand corner on the front underneath the shrink wrap and catalog number "AR-34001" located on the back cover and the bottom spine. 1st print cover with a red Apple image and the "1700 Broadway, New York, New York, 10019" address on the back. These promotional demonstration copies were sent to the media and radio stations several months before the official release of the album. Before the film’s screening at a movie theatre, the audience could see the film’s posters in the theatre’s hall, one of which is included in the listing. Original incredibly rare half-sheet 22” x 28” promotional poster prepared by the National Screen Service (NSS) and shipped to movie theaters nationwide before the film’s premier. The top right corner contains the NSS number “70/169” where the first number is the year when the film was released and the second one being the order number which was assigned to the film by the organization that year. Besides the poster, the other most popular movie promotion format was lobby cards which were also put in the movie theater’s hall to attract the viewers. Lobby cards, which are very similar to posters, but of a smaller size, gave a presentation of the film’s visual style and aesthetic which couldn’t be obtained from the text description like a newspaper article. It’s redundant to say that original lobby cards have become collectible items a long time ago, especially the ones that relate to the films that have become a phenomenon, like the currently listed ones, which are simply impossible to find in a full set. Lobby cards measuring 11” x 14” were also prepared by the NSS with their credits being identical to the half sheet poster. Additionally, both the poster and lobby cards contain the “Litho in U.S.A.” credit and logo at the bottom center as well as the distributor’s credits at the bottom left corner reading “Copyright © 1968 United Artists Corporation.” All of the promotional materials owned by the NSS were provided to movie theatres under the condition of being returned after the film’s exhibition. In the case if the return wasn’t possible, the NSS demanded that the movie theaters destroy the materials as indicated in the credits at the bottom right corner. We would like to note the fact that in many years of collecting and selling entertainment memorabilia, this is the first time we’ve come across a full set of 8 original “Litho in U.S.A.” lobby cards.
★
The factory sealed promotional copy is graded as Mint Minus condition. The top and bottom left corners of the front cover have a very light and barely visible push-in as well as the top left corner of the back cover. Aside from that the record is in stunning condition with the fully intact shrink wrap containing the original breathe holes, two on each side of the album. The very rare original half-sheet movie poster has been professionally restored and paper backed using an archival quality Japanese paper which will protect the poster preserving its condition for many many years to come. The poster had a couple of issues, including some light tears, which have been professionally addressed using the fully reversible archival methods, and is now somewhere between Very Fine and Excellent Minus condition. The full set of 8 original lobby cards is graded Near Mint condition with the lobby card #5 only having a very light and barely noticeable crease at the top left corner and another very light crease at the bottom right corner of lobby card #6. Aside from that, these incredibly hard to find lobby cards are in outstanding condition with a very clean front and back side.
