Description

An original 1st issue of Revolver on UK Parlophone from the tie of release. Matrix 2/2. Ok, so lets clear up any confusion with 1st press / 1st issue - FIRST! A very early 1st pressing of Revolver exists with a 2/1 matrix. This is example is NOT the very earliest 1st press. It would have come immediately after the 2/1 iteration - and have been available for purchase around the release date. So, how do we know that this copy is so early - how can we prove it? Well, you need to thoroughly examine the label design. TWO things stand out... Firstly the layout of the label is clearly EARLY. LOOK at how cramped the track-listing and credits are and how SMALL the band title is. Then note the 'Dr. Robert' abbreviated track on side 2. This is a clear indicator of an early copy. John Lennon stepped in early doors at the release date and OBJECTED to the abbreviated track listing. He thought it was misleading given the content of the song. ALL later copies would therein exhibit 'DOCTOR ROBERT'. These early copies are pressed heavy and sound fab. Also note the edge ridging on the labels. Some folks say this points to a CBS contract pressing. I don't that's true. I would imagine this is still pressed by EMI, but on different machinery in use from the period '65 to '66. The vinyl comes housed in an original G&L cover with flipbacks. The cover, whilst exhibiting the 3 exposed flipbacks of a sixties copy, actually comes from a couple of years later [the format indicator on the front top right - is absent]. We also have the original generic white inner from the time too.
Vinyl (Ex/Ex-) A superb looking original copy which has only seen light use. Under close inspection I could only make out a couple of light marks per side - nothing troublesome though. A thorough testing from beginning to end reveals a mostly EXCELLENT level of playback with just a couple of minor deviations. Lovely quiet intros and inbetweens and excellent clarity throughout. And this is particularly hard to find on Revolver. So, so, many copies look good at first sight - but often go on to disappoint. What we have is a good looking copy that will deliver the rendition someone fussy will be looking to track down. It plays pretty clean and clear even into the fussy tracks. Ok, so it's not totally perfect. I picked up the occasional crackle in 'Rigby' & 'Here There Everywhere' - but even these tracks play better than you typically find. Overall a very solid and very impressive rendition. Highly recommended.   Cover (Ex-) Very nicely preserved with original construction. Ok, so it looks like it's a '69 copy rather than '66 - but it is visually/structurally almost identical. And importantly it is well preserved with only some light ageing apparent on the front. The rear is looking pretty clean with just some some creasing at the opening edge. Very little edge wear and a 100% intact spine. Overall the cover retains excellent rigidity.
