The currently listed factory sealed copy of the 1st US pressing of The Beatles “Something New” album has quite as unusual story. Pressed at the Capitol Records in Los Angeles it was purchased at the Wallichs Music City record store in Hollywood located at the northwest corner of Sunset and Vine. The legendary store was founded by Glenn E. Wallichs who subsequently became one of the founders of Capitol Records. Wallichs Music City became the premier record store in Southern California and the world’s largest specialty record store. The store was one of the first which started to seal record albums in cellophane and put them in display racks for customers to browse. The store was also the first to have demonstration booths for listening to records. Wallichs Music City became a hub of the L.A. music scene. Music fans flocked there to meet artists like Bing Crosby, Judy Garland, Johnny Mercer and Nat King Cole to have them sign sheet music of their latest hits. Frank Zappa worked part-time there in 1965 as a salesman in the singles department. As the market for recorded music evolved during the 1950s and 1960s, the store was a source of tickets, sheet music, vinyl and tapes. Therefore, Wallichs Music Store was the main store which sold not only The Beatles albums but also tickets to their concerts. The popularity of the store was so big that The Pleasures recorded the song “Music City” as a tribute to it. We’ve included a copy of this 45 RPM as a bonus in this listing. The front cover of this factory sealed copy contains an original green “Wallichs Music City” record store retail sticker with the store’s logo. The album comes with an original large 15” x 19” branded blue paper bag which besides the “Wallichs Music City” logo also contains a list of store locations which had been opened in the Los Angeles area. Please pay attention that at our current auction this isn’t the only listing that has a direct bearing to one of the founders and President of Capitol Records, Glenn Wallichs.
