It took quite a lot of time in order to form this unique selection of original items which could be a part of The Beatles museum exhibition. This selection features rare items collected together that mark the joint cooperation between the Los Angeles No.1 radio station KFWB 98, which replaced the last letter “B” in its title for “Beatles” calling itself “K-F-W-Beatles” at the height of the Beatlemania, and the legendary record store Wallichs Music City whose founder Glenn E. Wallichs had already become the President of Capitol Records. KFWB was founded by Sam Warner, a co-founder of Warner Bros, and played a crucial role in promoting the music of The Beatles in the US. KFWB organized the first Beatles concert in Southern California which took place at the Balboa Stadium, San Diego in August, 1965, the tickets to which could be purchased at Wallichs Music City stores. Even the 1964 Beatles double LP album “The Beatles’ Story” features the narration by John Babcock from KFWB, along with Al Wiman and Roger Christian.

THE BEATLES TALK AND SING! WALLICHS MUSIC CITY KFWB / 98 · SOUVENIR RECORD

Radio station KFWB and the Wallichs Music City record store chain released a limited-edition promotional 7-inch record in 1964. This record features an interview with The Beatles on one side and the song "You Can't Do That" on the other. It was created to celebrate the opening of the Wallichs Topanga Plaza store in Canoga Park on June 5-13, 1964. The record was only available through the KFWB radio station and Wallichs Music City store chain. Holding an event at Wallichs made sense as the store's owner was a co-founder of Capitol Records. When this promotional issue was released Glenn E. Wallichs, being the President of Capitol Records, handed over the business to his brother, Clyde, whose original business cards are included in the listing. One of them is affixed to the back side of the envelope of the sealed record which most likely was Clyde’s personal copy.

CLYDE WALLICHS’ BUSINESS CARDS

Nine original vintage business cards of Clyde Wallichs, the President of Music Incorporated who replaced his brother Glenn E. Wallichs in this post. At this time, Glenn was fully involved in his work at Capitol Records. Music Incorporated included the Wallichs Music City record store chain. In an era when most recorded music was sold through mom and pop stores, Wallichs Music City became the premier record store in Southern California and the world's largest specialty record store.

THE BEATLES “CAN’T BUY ME LOVE” PICTURE SLEEVE WITH THE “KFWB” RUBBER INK STAMP

The second item in this selection is the promotional copy of The Beatles “Can’t Buy Me Love” 45 RPM single received by the KFWB radio station from Capitol Records for the purpose of promoting the single. Original picture sleeve of the single contains the radio station’s “KFWB” rubber ink stamp on the front. This example was pressed at the Capitol Records plant in Los Angeles and represents the copy which was first played and heard on KFWB. Since so few copies of this issue were made, all of the original picture sleeves to "Can't Buy Me Love" are East-Coast "straight-cut" sleeves. Original 1st print orange-yellow swirl labels without the “Subsidiary…” print contain the “Northern Songs Music Ltd.” publishing credits. The Bert-Co-printed labels have the title of the singles written on 2 lines unlike the East Coast labels printed by Keystone that have it on 1 line. The 1st Capitol Records, Los Angeles, CA plant pressing containing the identifier in the form of a five-pointed “☆” Hollywood star in the runout grooves of both sides. The full matrix numbers of this copy are as follows: Side 1 (You Can’t Do That) – 45-X-44913-G-2 3 ☆ 2; Side 2 (Can't Buy Me Love) – 45-X-44914-F-1 4 ☆. The record comes with the original Capitol records black and white die-cut inner sleeve.

KFWB HIT LIST WITH THE “WALLICHS MUSIC CITY” RUBBER STAMP

Even though Wallichs Music City had its own hit lists, KFWB which was Los Angeles’ No.1 radio station was sharing its own lists to Wallichs, which were called the “Fabulous Forty Survey”. One of these examples is included in the listing dating for week ending May 23, 1964 and containing a large “WALLICHS MUSIC CITY” rubber ink stamp. It’s interesting that at the time, during the peak of Beatlemania, the radio station stylizes its name to “K-F-W-Beatles”. The Beatles “Can’t Buy Me Love” single occupies the 3rd position on the list which is marked with a small five-pointed star meaning that the record was first heard on KFWB which is indicated at the bottom of the list. The left side of the insert features the photos of the legendary DJs, including Elliot Field, with the schedule of their air time. Among the record labels indicated on the list one can read Tollie Records, Capitol Records and Vee Jay Records with whom the radio station worked no less closely than with the other companies.

THE POSTCARD WITH A PHOTO OF THE LEGENDARY KFWB RADIO DJ ELLIOT FIELD CONTAINING HIS HOLIDAY WISHES TO VEE JAY RECORDS

Elliot Field, who unfortunately passed away recently, was a very popular DJ at the KFWB radio station that made his career not only as a Los Angeles Top 40 DJ, but also as a voice actor in cartoons like The Flintstones, The Incredible Hulk and Snooper and Blabber. He was a very sociable person who had a wide range of friends and acquaintances, including the team of Vee-Jay Records. The text with his wishes for the upcoming 1964 New Year to Vee-Jay’s Promotion Department in the postcard doesn’t leave any doubts about this. It’s remarkable that the postcard was delivered to Vee-Jay Records practically on the same date when The Beatles “Introducing The Beatles” was released, January 10th, 1964.

The original sealed souvenir record with a Clyde Wallichs’ business card affixed to the back of the envelope is in stunning Mint Minus condition, very clean, just like the very rare original picture sleeve of the “Can’t Buy Me Love / You Can’t Do That” single containing the “KFWB” rubber ink stamp on its front and is graded as Near Mint. The picture sleeve is very clean and doesn’t have any splits, writing, residue, soiling or ring wear. The original Capitol Records black /white inner sleeve is in great Near Mint Minus condition only having a couple of very small scuffs along the top edge. We grade the record as somewhere between Strong Very Good Plus and Excellent Minus. It has a shiny factory gloss only having a few very light surface hairlines as well as scuffs from the original sleeve. The vivid orange / yellow labels are in Near Mint condition without having any scuffs, wear or spindle mars. The vinyl plays fantastic having a warm and soft Mono sound. The original KFWB hit list with the Wallichs Music City rubber ink stamp, postcard addressed to Vee-Jay Records Promotion Department and Clyde Wallichs business cards are in great vintage condition.
