Description

Shaped picture disc records weren't born in the 80s, but they became immensely popular during that decade. It just seemed like the thing to do. Release your new single on a fun and whimsical vinyl picture disc, usually with an odd shape and/or colors. Today we take a look at SIX different artists, and SIX rare shaped picture disc singles from the 80s!

We'll start with the band Mental as Anything. They're an Australian post-punk, rock, and new wave band that formed in '76, and stayed active until as recently as 2019. In 1985, they released an album titled 'Fundamental (As Anything)'. Frequently shortened to 'Fundamental'. The first single released from the album is a song called "You're So Strong", which came out a bit before the album did, in 1984, FORTY years ago! And it's a ripped bicep with a tattoo on the A side, and the same bicep, but with no tattoo and song titles and credits on the B side.

Next up is legendary American singer and songwriter Jackson Browne, and his 1986 track "For America". The A side is Lady Liberty, proudly holding that torch up high, and the B side is song titles and credits. From his album called 'Lives in the Balance'. Then we have British progressive rock band Barclay James Harvest, and the song "Victims of Circumstance", the title track of their 1984 album, which also turned FORTY years old this year. The A side is strange artwork, and the B side is song titles and credits, and an instrumental version of "Victims of Circumstance".

We move on to the Stranglers, a punk rock, pub rock, and new wave band from the UK. Those guys formed in 1974, FIFTY year ago, and are still around to this very day! The Stranglers are here today with "No Mercy" from the '84 FORTY year old album titled 'Aural Sculpture'. The A side artwork is a wild ear sculpture, and the B side is song titles and credits. The B side song "In One Door" was a non-album tracks at the time, but was later added to the 2001 CD reissue.

In 1985, alternative country rockers Jason & the Scorchers released their debut album called 'Lost and Found'. The band is considered to be cowpunk, a blend of county and punk rock. The band is here with the single "Shop It Around", and on a wild shaped picture disc. The A side is cowboy boots and flames artwork, and the B side is song titles and credits, and a band pic. And we'll end with someone named Dan Myers, a folk and pop singer with a country edge to his music. He released this crazy dragonfly shaped pic disc with one song on each side. B side is song titles and credits, and solid white. The A side single is the track "A Peaceful Heart (The Dragonfly)", released in '83.

All of these are from the 80s, so around the forty year mark. They all look like they're in good shape, with a couple looking better than the others. Only Jackson Browne comes in its original clear PVC jacket with hype sticker. The rest will come in clear generic sleeves. Most have a few light surface marks on them. Jackson Browne and The Stranglers are staying to oxidize a bit. (That just means an inferior ckear vinyl was used and gets discolored over the years.) I can't vouch for the sound quality as I never play specialty vinyl such as pic discs or colored records. Older picture discs usually sound bad anyway, as it took them many years to work out the bugs. Today's picture discs sound amazing!

Bring home a bundle of strange and wonderful shaped picture discs from the 80s today, and before someone else beats you to it! Vinyl collecting is red hot in 2024, and these would make 'totally awesome' additions to your collection! Available now for a really nice price.
