Description
Here is the only record, made in Paris, 1935, by expatriate Americans FREDDY TAYLOR AND HIS SWING MEN FROM HARLEM, and it's a beut:
"VIPER'S DREAM" and "BLUE DRAG"
These pieces fully live up to their titles - hypnotic, riff-driven jazz, which sets you off in a hypnotic direction, that could only be achieved by music or drugs or both. It's one of the earliest "riff" records I'm aware of. It sounds like the direct antecedent to the Benny Goodman Sextet of 1939-'41, when the riffs were provided by Charlie Christian. If you're planning a lost weekend opium party, this is the perfect soundtrack!
This band was full of Americans on vacation: CHARLIE JOHNSON - trumpet / CHESTER LANIER - clarinet / FLETCHER ALLEN - tenor sax / JOHN FERRIER - piano OSCAR ALEMAN - guitar / EUGENE D'HELLEMMES - bass / WILLIAM DIEMER - drums.
This original 1935 French Ultraphone AP 1489 is in E condition.
