Rarest Holy Modal Rounders...?
Another GREAT and collectible 1971 first pressing on the increasingly hard to find METROMEDIA label, home label to the legendary CHRISTOPHER album and other such notable psaych/garage collectibles...here we have The HOLY MODAL ROUNDERS delivering a classic among classics... a special pre-release WHITE LABEL PROMOTIONAL
The HOLY MODAL ROUNDERS were not so much a group as a changing aggregation centered around the two principals, Peter Stampfel and Steve Weber. When the pair got together in 1961, the intention was to update old-time folk music with a contemporary spirit. As Stampfel told the news media, "The Rounders" were the first really bent traditional band. And the first traditionally based band that was not trying to sound like an old record." They weren't the only musicians in New York thinking along these lines, and Stampfel and Weber contributed heavily to the first recordings by a similar, more rock-oriented group, the Fugs.
The Rounders began recording in the mid-'60s for Prestige as an acoustic duo. Even at this early stage, they were not for everybody. Although clearly accomplished musicians, and well-versed in folk traditions, they were determined to subvert these with off-kilter execution and strange lyrics that could be surreal, whimsical, or just flipped-out. They outraged folk purists by simply changing melodies and words to suit their tastes on some of their cover versions of old standards; Stampfel once wrote in the liner notes that "I made up new words to it because it was easier than listening to the tape and writing words down."
SAID TO BE...the Holy Modal Rounders’ rarest album Good Taste Is Timeless can now breathe the sweet air of freedom! Rounders’ founders Peter Stampfel and Steve Weber—the godfathers of anti-folk—fire every cap pistol in their satchel for this clat-tering, jugband-on-acid classic, cut in Nashville in 1971 with guest artists Tracy Nelson (Mother Earth), and pedal steel legend Pete Drake. Featuring the definitive version of Rounders gonzo ditty "Boobs A Lot" which they first performed with and for the FUGS in 1965. Everything in between included others that would become permanent members including Euphoria writer Robin Remaily, Micheal McCarty on drums, and the wonderful Richard Tyler on keyboards. That is the band heard here. Lets not forget that Scotty Moore (Think Elvis' Orignal Guitar Player!) in the studio engineering this thing with this ragtag group of folky hippies. It's no wonder Stampfel expressed the band being nervous during the sessions. this is a great album as a twisted rural-rock album with craziness.
