Wilson Pickett's in-your-face vocal style made for a number of excellent singles that sold in the millions. Unfortunately, his albums were frequently mishmashes, containing several strong tracks but just as many mediocrities. Thankfully, "The Wicked Pickett" is a different story. Each of these ten tracks is strong, even if six of them are remakes of other people's well-known hits. Even its biggest single, "Mustang Sally," was a cover of Sir Mack Rice's 1965 original.

An earmark of a great singer is to convert a song identified with a different act into something uniquely one's own. (This equation does *not* include Mrs. Miller's "Downtown.") Pickett does this repeatedly and makes it seem like the most natural thing on earth. He updates Gary "U.S." Bonds' "New Orleans" with an arrangement inspired by Pickett's earlier hit, "Land of 1000 Dances." He redoes "Sunny," slowing the tempo down to a crawl and eschewing Bobby Hebb's sweet-soul interpretation for a lyrical reading with an undercurrent of smoldering anger. Pickett also funks up Jessie Hill's Mardi Gras perennial, "Ooh Poo Pah Doo," and nearly outdoes Eddie Floyd with "Knock on Wood." Finally, Pickett's performance of "Time is on My Side" puts it right back where it belongs--in New Orleans, where Irma Thomas waxed the version that the Rolling Stones ripped off for their pedestrian rendition.

Also worthwhile is the uptempo "You Left the Water Running," which Pickett recorded after hearing a demo that Otis Redding had made especially for him. There's one last rocker, "Three-Time Loser," which I'm pretty sure Pickett didn't really consider himself. Finally, we come to the ballads "She Ain't Gonna Do Right" and "Uptight, Good Woman," deep-soul grinders that show exactly why the Detroit-born Pickett fit in so well at the Stax studios in Memphis.

It had everything -- great songs, wonderful production and arrangements, and a hungry, galvanizing Wilson Pickett hollering, screaming, shouting, and soaring on anything he covered, from ballads to uptempo dance and midtempo wailers.

PLEASE NOTE: THIS ACETATE APPARENTLY NEVER HAD A CUSTOM COVER;  THE ALBUM WILL BE SHIPPED IN A PLAIN, GENERIC [WHITE] CARDBOARD COVER. ACETATES AND REFERENCE PRESSINGS ARE RARELY – IF EVER – FOUND IN CUSTOM (STOCK) COVERS.

While this acetate is in a very decent state of preservation, we do expect bidders to understand that the aluminum-based, shellac-coated acetates can never be graded by using the exact, same stringent standards used by collectors for modern long-play, hi-fi LPs or singles. The buyer – if not familiar with acetate (reference) recordings - should be cautioned that these discs were intended for brief, limited use only; they were meant to be played only a few times, then discarded or destroyed. In view of this, the surface layer of the disc is manufactured in such a manner that it will wear off pretty quickly, even under normal conditions -- and specially if not handled with due care. Each subsequent playing increases wear and tear of the disc’s surface layer and diminishes the disc’s playability. This disc appears to have been unplayed recently and the grooves are still well-formed and fully visible.

This acetate is in about VERY GOOD+ (VG+) condition, with some minor, superficial (BUT DEFINITELY VISIBLE) scuffs. Absolutely NO part of the shellac (surface layer) of the disc is  missing, and the surface layer is NOT dented, chipped, broken or otherwise compromised.
