THE WOODEN O - A Handeful Of Pleasant Delites ORIG Middle Earth LP / MDLS 301 (UK, Stereo, 1969)

Happy to present this very scarce late 60’s curio on the famed and much revered UK Middle Earth label. The brainchild of James Harpham, this is a lovely mix of baroque folk, jazz improvisations and experimental acoustics, backed by some great players including David Snell, the harpist who played on the Incredible String Band’s ‘Hangman’s Beautiful Daughter’.

The single format, fully laminated sleeve was made by Garrod & Lofthouse Ltd and is a real gem for it’s 41 years. THIS WILL BE DIFFICULT TO FIND BETTER! Apart from one tiny corner dink to the bottom right, it is COMPLETELY UNCREASED (front and rear). There is NO edge wear, no spine wear (all text fully legible) and no laminate flaking or cracking. The opening edges are superb with near to full sharpness. There is no wear to the top 2 corners, the bottom ones display the merest of rubbing with a very small crease to the right. Add to this the faintest of ring impression to the front left and THERE IS NOTHING ELSE TO MENTION! A superb sleeve which is virtually like new, but because of the smallest handling signs comes in at a TRUE EX+ (Excellent Plus).

The pale blue original Middle Earth labels are superb. Both sides have only one faint spindle trail, maintain full colour and have NO writing, residue, dirt or foxing spots.

The sharp medium-heavy vinyl is beautiful. THERE IS LITTLE TO FAULT THIS RARE 1960’S PERIOD PIECE! It looks untouched with maximum shine. It shows just one tiny, near invisible scratch to Side 1/Track 6 which causes around a dozen clicks. However, this is isolated and most would overlook it, probably not even noticing it. Other than that, there are NO scuffs (not even small ones), no hairlines, no embedded dirt, no dust pockets and no craters or bubbles. It has been carefully listened to and apart from the aforementioned clicks, there is no snap, BARELY ANY crackle or surface noise and no pops. There is no hiss and it plays without distortion or loss of clarity. All round deserves a genuine EX+ (Excellent Plus).

Probably harder to find than the Writing On The Wall LP on Middle Earth, this must be up there in the very best surviving copies of this baroque Psych folk oddity. Surely there’ll be a long wait until another such near flawless example. Don’t miss!
