The third installment in French winds/ keyboards wizard Yochk'o Seffer's Neffesh Music trilogy (the previous two being "Delire" and "Ima," both on Moshe Niam's "Moshe Niam" label), "Ghilgoul" is a Zao-styled tour-de-force into the French "Zeuhl" ("Soul") genre that defines what the style can do. One side features slower, subdued, hypnotic trance music while the other is all about wailing, over-the-top Magma-styled fusion-prog. A fouding member of the fabled '70s French prog band Zao as well as an occasional member of Magma and collaborator with Magma founder Christin Vander, Seffer is one of the people who invented this genre. In the late '70s he journeyed to America, taking part in the Zu manifestival tour (with Daevid Allen and other Gong-related musicians) furthering his reputation to a more worldwide audience, and the rest, as they say, is history. Walking a fine line between classic, jazzy prog and total avant-garde, Seffer's work is always inventive while being utterly listenable and inspiring. Of particular note is the incredible tone he gets from his saxes, at times sounding synthesized, and the remarkable blended texture this has in conjunction with his keyboards. The fifteen minute title track here says it all. Whether it's his jazzy fusion-centered music, or his head-spinning, smaller-ensemble ethnicky spiritual pieces, his style is truly masterful, inventive, and conciusness-expanding - what it's all about!
