Only the Lonely exemplifies Kerouac’s exploration of themes related to heartache and solitude, which resonate deeply with Jack Kerouac's own experiences. As a teenager, Sinatra was a significant musical idol for Kerouac. When he left home to attend Columbia University, he often listened to Sinatra records, sometimes with "tears in his eyes," while drinking beer with friends in a fraternity house. This early admiration for Sinatra persisted into Kerouac's later years; during a relationship with Helen Weaver in the late 1950s, he would sing Sinatra songs to her to mend their arguments, highlighting the personal significance of Sinatra's music in his life.
