Label/Format: Parlophone with very gently textured matt surfaces. Side one has the embossed ‘K T’ tax codes, both of which are unworn. These labels meet the criteria for a ‘first’ pressing with the ‘Sold in U.K.’ text.

Label Conditions: Both clean, fresh and attractive with only moderately light and fine spindle marks and no wear around the hole area. Given the popularity, age and mode of this vintage record, these can be considered light and way less than average for a 1960s Beatles album. This copy plays superbly as well and has suffered no traumas or accidents.

Rarity: Like all Beatles albums, this sold in considerable numbers, condition is always the paramount factor with so many mono copies in particular in very poor heavily played condition. Fewer seen these days worthy of a second look (or listen).

Brief Info: The fifth Beatles album and second from a film soundtrack. Side one’s songs are from the movie, the rest are all new tracks. Again this sold impressively but condition is always the most difficult factor. Most fans will know the album well enough.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): and arguably better. A single format with front laminate, this covers all the folds and ends on three rear flipbacks. The main back panel is matt and smooth. Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse Ltd and includes the ‘Patents pending’ text as well as the original outline font word ‘mono’ on the front. The early tracing paper lined inner sleeve is also included.

Lamination & Front: A very impressive and attractive front with the laminate retaining excellent shine, freshness and clarity which has no lifting with minimal traces of dulling or rim impression which would be more unusual with such a thick heavy record inside for over half-a-century. The white artwork beneath is still that – white – not yellowed, browned or toned – any hint of discoluration mimimal anf aint. So this is a one to hold and enjoy, not hide away. Any of the very few creases fine and light and mosly confined the edges. Cover-protection for most of its time has ensured this has aged little and remains attractive, fresh and clean.

Cover Back: Again impressive and clean with any traces of discoluration little and very faint indeed near the left edge. The matt main panel with no rubbing, writing or creasing, these are seldom seen as such. All three flipbacks are impressive as well: solid, clean with neat crisp ends that have no grime line formation to their laminate ends. Any creasing to their laminate few, fine and light. So both front and back are really nice and give scant clues of age.

Top & Bottom Edges: Both straight, very smooth with full laminate retention and unworn.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Some patchy, relatively light thickening seen viewed end-on. This the only reason I decided not to add the extra plus. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: Solid, quite straight with minimal bowing or compression, the ends are lightly nipped in manufacture. The text is unworn under the solid and uncracked laminate, the text also neatly centred as-seen.

Corners: Any tip rubs minusciule with better than excellent shape retained with no knocks, finding these mid-60s Beatles covers with virtually no corner dinks or wear is incredibly difficult.

Cover Summary: A superb and highly impressive all-round example of this popular 1960’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. This beautiful item should please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: with just some creasing to the corners, this often deliberate to stop the record sliding out. An early original tracing paper lined ‘Use Emitex’ white inner. Only gently darkened with age with two crisp untorn window circles, the lining neat and solid as well. All edges are naturally intact.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+): arguably better for a highly popular mono record. Most fans and collectors will know the state many, if not most are found in these days. A highly impressive and very fine visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and heavily pressed with above average weight. A copy with unusually very modest, and equally careful plays on all the evidence with any surface marks few, very light, wispy and faint as seen critically under bright light. No penetrating stylus scratches whatsoever, viewed in average room light, barely anything even registers. Visually a super record that should please many, if not most collectors again.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing equipment, all listed further down.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This classic Beatles album plays even above it’s high visual grading with barely anything to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is a very clean pressing with no tracking issues* or inherent pressing noises. This includes the crucial and challenging song ‘Yesterday’, one that so often clips, crackles and even breaks up due to the intensity of the content, also it’s situated on that critical area where the tracking angle becomes more difficult. Always the first song I play on this album to check quality before I purchase, if ‘Yesterday’ plays well, the rest of the album usually follows, and this one does exactly that. Few available copies will outperform this early ‘first’ pressing I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp when played on a standard stereo system. I am certain this record has been played only a few times and clearly with utmost care on a finer record player. Superbly stored and carefully handled within a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this lovely record. It will prove difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.
