Description
An original 4th UK press of PPM on the Parlophone label. Matrix 1N/1N - very 1st cut. Note that label design is consistent with 4th press from summer 1963 - 4 months from 1st release in the spring. Important indicators -- 'Parlophone' perimeter text,... recording 1st published [present],...and IMPORTANTLY NO 'Sold In The UK'. This is bona fide summer 1963. Think about that for a second...And then take a look at the condition of this record! These early copies are tank proof and the grooves are deeeeeep. The vinyl comes housed in an original and true mono G&L cover with flipbacks. Looks like Garrod won the contract to print most of the Beatles covers in Summer 1963. Also included is the original Emitex inner sleeve. So, 100% complete and 100% genuine. [weight = 175 grams].
Vinyl (Ex/Ex+) Looking in very smart condition and has only seen light careful use. Under close inspection there are a few light marks, one or two slightly more noticeable looking - but all are very superficial and will not feature in the audio. A thorough testing from beginning to end reveals a level of playback varying between EXCELLENT & EXCELLENT+ with one very slight deviation. If you're looking for a standout and defining top-level rendition of this BEATLES classic.. you could do a lot worse than consider this little number. The most important thing to consider, here, is that the original owner of this LP was careful and fastidious. This record is preserved to an unusually high level for this vintage period. And it shows - in the audio. The early heavy-set mono copies sound awesome and I can't imagine any other copy quite managing to deliver the warmth and presence on offer here. But finding a decently preserved copy is the trick - and thankfully THIS is that copy. Intros and inbetweens are very nice and quiet and the audio comes across with EXCELLENT clarity. It plays CLEAN - throughout. It plays CLEAN in up tempo numbers. It plays CLEAN in the low-key ones too. There is very little background noticeable at all. You might detect a couple of crackles in a couple of isolated moments per side - it is that good. I certainly have never witnessed a better playing 1963 original copy. In 'Honey' I can hear the space and ambience behind the guitar and vocal and some very delicate work by Ringo very low in the mix. 'Honey' and 'Do You Want To Know A Secret - are typically the tracks which will exhibit background even on decent copies. NOT here - it plays clean as a whistle. One or twice there are a few rustles in the odd gap in between tracks [strictly - in gaps]. And the only audible interference I could pick out during tracks was a couple of low-key ticks toward the end of the track 'PS I Love You' - no big deal at all and very fleeting. A top-level copy which any discerning collector should be looking to snag for the long-term. PLEASE NOTE.. one label exhibits a slight sticker removal mark. The other exhibits a yellow sticker. Given it's within the labels colour scheme I don't actually think it's all that obtrusive.
Cover (Ex-) In lovely condition - and boy do I wish that they all surfaced from '63 looking as darn sweet as this. The first thing to mention is that the cover is perfectly flat without warping or curl. Nearly all copies suffer from this in some sort of form. The corners are all still pointed without dings. The front is like a mirror shiny as they come with a couple of very slight thumbnail creases. Hardly any edge wear and the openings are nice and haven't feathered like some do. The rear is usually the area where PPM copies let the side down. But this one seems to have avoided the worst excesses of the ageing process. Yes, there's a few light blemishes and some low-level handling - BUT it is looking pretty spritely for 57 years of age. All flipbacks are PERFECTLY intact and secure. The spine is 100% intact [perfect]. Overall the cover retains excellent rigidity. A specimen which wows and would be difficult to equal.
Emitex (Vg+) Light ageing. A couple of side splits have been taped up.
