Description

An original 1st press of DPIR on the UK Harvest label from 1970. Matrix 2/1 - technical 1st cut. Note that the labels mention 'Gramophone' in the perimeter text. And importantly - there are NO EMI logos on these labels - this is the cast iron proof of 1st issue. These early copies are worth tracking down as they are just a wee bit heavier pressed than copies only a year later. The vinyl comes housed in an original 1st issue cover. The earliest 1st copies essentially are a print error - when it comes to the Harvest logo. You will notice only one single rectangular box around the Harvest logo - and the circle is partially incomplete. On later copies they've touched the circle up and added a further border [so they then exhibit a double rectangular box]. This example definitely has just the one. We also have an original Harvest advertising inner sleeve. So, 100% genuine and 100% complete.
Vinyl (Ex-/Vg+) In great condition and has only seen relatively light use. Under close inspection there are a few light marks per side and a couple of radial marks on the run-in to side 1. Thankfully whilst visible they're not feelable and don't seem to impinge on the audio. A thorough testing from beginning to end reveals a mostly NEAR EXCELLENT level of playback with a couple of deviations. Don't know about you but I very rarely see/listen to a decent copy of IN ROCK. There are a myriad reasons as to why - but these early copies certainly are really hard to track down playing well [consistently]. This copy is not perfect - so if you are someone very fussy I would keep-on trying to find that elusive perfect copy. But if you're someone who's prepared to compromise a little in a couple of spots - this could be the copy for you. I have to say I was very impressed with this rendition - I have many sub-par copies... But this example is very adept at delivering a lot of that raw energy and detail, for instance, on Paice's frenetic drumming. I like it! Firstly, it is a relatively clean player. In the up tempo tracks [80%+ of the LP] this record is blindingly good and delivers accurate undistorted sound. You can hear the drumming with precision - the guitar shredding is perfectly resolved. Don't expect it to be perfectly quiet in all areas. In the intro to Speed King there's just a touch of static rustle [just after that frenetic mad opening]. Then there's that classic track Child In Time - and those quiet moments. This record will exhibit a bit of static rustle in these parts - but it is not up front or invasive... but it is definitely audible. So, as I mention above - if you need a perfectly clean copy...you will need to look elsewhere. However, if you can accept a bit of deviation in a couple of spots - the rest of The LP [90%] will knock-you-out.
Cover (Ex-) Again, not as easy as you might think to find a true 1st issue in great condition. A lot were battered and the interior is very often aged [or worse]. But this true very earliest version is looking pretty darn tidy. Front and back are clean and flat exhibiting nothing negative at all. The interior is very impressive indeed - not many copies will look this good. The whites are still white - and there's no sign of anything nasty lurking in there [just faintest handling evidence]. Edge wear is very minor and the openings are still sharp. The spine is 100% intact. Overall the cover retains excellent rigidity.
Inner (Vg+) Aged in places. And a one inch side split. Poly-bag still present and in place.
